On 24 June a small group of gay and lesbian people operating as the Gay Solidarity Group staged a day of events in Sydney. The intention was to promote gay and lesbian culture and to encourage political activism against the discrimination they routinely experienced. The group organised a traditional march and public meeting in the morning and a street parade at night.

This first Mardi Gras Parade ended in violence and 53 people arrested, but the police crackdown fired up a community who would no longer be silent. Our people were out of the closets and into the streets. Every year since, we have gathered in a colourful explosion of self-expression, celebration and protest.

Bolstered by these traditions, gay organizing around Mardi Gras gained momentum as the LGBTQ community in New Orleans grew.
